Man Strikes Back

Andreas Jüttner for BNN (D)

Belgian duo makes a special impression

The Belgian company Post from Huisdalen left a lasting impression with their show “Man Strikes Back”. The juggling skills of Stijn Grupping are an experience in themselves: he throws his balls not high into the air, but against obstacles, from which they bounce against other obstacles bounce until they end up back in his hands again.

This throwing precision, which was already astonishing with three balls, he manages just as well with six balls at once – and strictly in time with the rhythm set by his stage partner Frederik Meulyzer on the drums. And as if that weren’t difficult enough, the throwing obstacles also turn out to be machines that can change their position at will, so that new paths for the balls are constantly being created.

The performance is therefore not only breathtaking to watch. It also cleverly tells the story of both the possibilities and the pressures that arise when people become dependent on technology. Given such productions, in which original ideas are executed with extraordinary skill, it is no wonder that the audience also showed their confidence and rewarded several performances with ‘sold-out’ ratings, particularly during the second block of the ten-day festival.
